1848 1C PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. N-19, Low R.6. A proof only variety. Walter Breen, in his <I>Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins</B></I>, presents a roster of 16 pieces, but then says: " ... I have excellent reason to believe that this enumeration is far from complete." <BR> This Premium Gem has impressive quality obverse and reverse surfaces. There is a fine irregular line across the of 1 in the date just above the base. The reverse has a fine die line on the rim over TED. Intermingled mint orange color with hints of blue toning resides on the obverse, and rich reddish-orange color with light blue on the reverse. It is sharply struck with slight cameo contrast. The surfaces on both sides are well preserved. Census: 2 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (6/07).
