1848 1C PR66 Red and Brown NGC. N-19, Low R.6. Ex: P.
1848<1C> PR66 Red and Brown NGC. N-19, Low R.6. Ex: P. Kaufman. A proof only variety with about 25 pieces known. This glorious Gem has impressive quality obverse and reverse surfaces. The date was originally entered in the die with a sharp slant down to the right. The base of a 1 is recut above, the 4 slightly to the left, and the final 8 slightly below. The reverse has a fine die line on the rim over TED, and this same die line can be seen on all of the 1840s proof large cents in this sale. All of these coins were struck from the same reverse die; either the reverse die was saved from year to year for use only on proof coins, or all of these coins were struck at the same time, at some later date. This Gem proof has intermingled orange mint color with hints of blue toning on the obverse and rich reddish-orange color with light blue on the reverse. It is sharply struck with slight cameo contrast. EAC PR63.
