1848<1C> N-26, R.5--Damaged--NCS. AU Details. XF40 EAC. Grellman state c. Fine lapping lines on the reverse are confined to the interiors of ONE CENT. A slightly curved line passes through the stem end, just above the tip. This is probably a Condition Census example of the variety and of the die state, although it is extremely difficult to grade. Both surfaces have splendid olive-brown color with considerable original orange mint luster, but are finely and extensively abraded. The cataloger for the first Robinson Brown sale described this as having the sharpness of an AU55 grade coin, "with enough original color of the quality of Mint State 63." In that sale, the coin was net graded as VF25. In the 1972 Stack's sale, the cataloger stated that more than 50% mint red remained, with "many microscopic nicks on the obverse," apparently not bothering to examine the reverse.
Ex: S.S.
