1848 $1 AU58 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint's emission of 1848 silver dollars was the lowest of the 1840s, at only 15,000 pieces plus an unknown but small handful of proofs. According to Bowers, it is unclear whether many of the 1848 silver dollars were exported and melted, as although California gold was discovered in 1848 the Gold Rush began in earnest in 1849, precipitating the oversupply of gold and rising silver prices. This piece offers untoned silvery surfaces with just a trace of highpoint rub and generous eye appeal. A linear abrasion is noted near star 11.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
