1848<1/2 C> First Restrike. SR-10, B-2, High R.5. PR64 Brown NGC. PR60 EAC. Large date; Small berries, doubled T in CENT. This is the plate coin in the second edition of Cohen. Attractive medium brown color with light green toning highlights. Struck from a severely buckled obverse die with the central details quite flat. Similarly, the central reverse is weakened as a result, indicating that this is most likely a member of Series III, as discussed by Breen. Just two dates of the First Restrike series are easily obtained (relatively speaking); 1843 and 1848 are much more plentiful than any other year in the 1840s. If Breen's comments in his Half Cent Encyclopedia, are considered, it would seem that the entire series of Proof Restrike Half Cents were produced exclusively for coin dealer William Idler, who was closely connected with the Mint and its officers.
Ex: Jamie McConnell; Julian Leidman (4/15/1974). Envelope Included.
