1847-O<$2 1/2> Liberty Quarter Eagle--Medallic Alignment--XF45 NGC. For the advanced type collector of error gold, the branch mints from the 19th century present a special challenge. Very few errors escaped the mints in the first place; and second, of the ones that did escape attrition has taken a high toll. The incentive to melt gold coins over the period of 150+ years is irresistible for a variety of reasons. Thus, if the collector is seeking an error New Orleans gold coin, multiple struck or dropped letters or saddle strikes are just not available. What is available are the occasional rotated die pieces, such as this one. The reverse on this piece is almost, but not quite, 180 degrees aligned relative to the obverse. The surfaces show a subdued tan-gold coloration and the strike is typical for the issue with no mentionable handling marks to distract the viewer.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
