1847-O $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Surprisingly we
1847-O<$2 1/2> MS63 NGC. Surprisingly well detailed on the obverse, save for minor weakness on RTY and stars 11 and 13; but softly struck on the reverse, where most of the eagle's finer design details are mushy. The obverse has radial die cracks from the device to the border, through stars 3, 7, and 11. Both sides of the coin are lustrous and well preserved, and exhibit pleasing apricot and mint-green toning. At the time of striking the reverse die was rotated 90 degrees in a counterclockwise fashion, relative to the obverse. The 1847-O is much scarcer than its relatively large mintage of 124,000 pieces would suggest. Only five or six pieces are believed known in MS63 to MS65 condition, and none have so far been graded any higher than MS65 by either of the major services. Census: 2 in 63, 3 finer (2/06).
