1847-O $10 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6881, Doubled 18 in da
1847-O $10 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6881, Doubled 18 in date. Choice and Gem quality Mint State Liberty Eagles from the early era before the addition of the motto on the reverse are remarkably rare. This is true of all dates, even those that are considered the most common issues. In 1847, the New Orleans Mint produced 571,500 of these coins, and this is the third highest mintage of any date produced from 1838 to 1866. In fact, there were only 21 dates with higher mintages in the entire Liberty Head Eagle series, including all dates through 1907! Given this relatively high mintage, the novice collector might be led to believe that this '47-O Eagle is a common issue in all grades. This is clearly not the case as a review of population and auction data will prove. In the last dozen years, Heritage has offered for auction sale a total of 165 examples of this date. Of that quantity, just one previous appearance was a coin graded MS64 and only five others were for coins grading MS60 or MS61. Including the present opportunity, this is only the seventh time we have offered a Mint State example of this date for sale! PCGS and NGC population data support the rarity of this issue and this design type in higher grades. The two services have combined to grade just 64 examples of the design type in MS64 or finer grades, with a downward adjustment to this total necessary for resubmissions. The present example is one of three 1847-O Eagles certified as MS64 by PCGS with none finer.
Although the central obverse hair details show very slight weakness, this is an otherwise sharply struck example. All of the stars are fully delineated and the eagle's claws are similarly well detailed. The surfaces have brilliant yellow-gold luster with a frosty texture. The surfaces have a few grazes to the luster along with other light abrasions, but there are no distracting marks. Some of the reverse letters show slight doubling, the result of strike or machine doubling. The digits 18 are very slightly doubled below, described by Walter Breen and listed separately in his Encyclopedia as "Very Rare." He discussed two auction appearances of the variety, but neither were plated thus pedigree tracking is not possible. As noted above, one other MS64 example appeared in a Heritage auction (October 1995) and that was a different coin than this. The present opportunity is extremely important, not only for the advanced collector, but for the type collector as well. Lot:8735
