1847 N-43 R8+ (Unique) Repunched 1 F15.
1847 N-43 R8+ (Unique) Repunched 1 F15. Sharpness VF20 or slightly better with very fine microscopic porosity covering most of the planchet. There is a small nick close under the chin, a dull rim nick over star 8, and another right of star 12. Slightly glossy olive and steel brown. Completely free of verdigris and all the attribution points are clear, including the repunching at the base of the 1. This variety was discovered by Fred Borcherdt in 1989 and verified by Bob Grellman in August of that year. The variety combines the earliest state of the N-30 obverse with the earliest state of the N-7 reverse. Both dies are distinctive and easily identified, but no additional examples have been found. The variety was announced in Penny-Wise and featured in several editions of the widely distributed Cherrypicker's Guide (by Fivaz and Stanton). In spite of the publicity and ease of identification, this example remains unique. One of only two unique die varieties in the late date cent series (the other is 1851 Newcomb-42, and both are from marriages of dies used to strike other varieties). A highlight of this outstanding collection. DWH #2084.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
