1847 N-42 R6+ Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Mint red fading to bluish steel brown with subtle overtones of iridescent rose and half the original color remaining. The fields are deeply mirrored and free of notable hairlines. There is a tiny speck of carbon at the dentils under the 8 and a small spot of darker steel toning on the rim at star 12. A barely visible planchet cutter impression shows on the outer edge of the rim below the 18 and at the left of star 1, and a tiny planchet chip is located midway between stars 12 & 13, all as struck. A beautiful proof cent that offers outstanding eye appeal. Called proof-64 in the Bland census and Proof-60+ in the Loring list. Our grade is Proof-64, tied for finest known honors with two other pieces in the Grellman census. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
