1847 N-24 R1 MS62.
1847 N-24 R1 MS62. Very attractive lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with hints of very faded mint color peeking through in protected areas on both sides. This cent is choice except for a few tiny ticks on the cheek and chin and a small spot of darker olive brown toning in the field right of the inner curl. M-LDS, die state c. The crack at ME to the dentils over the adjacent letters is clear, the small clashmark at the chin is visible, and traces of the die lines from the inner curl remain clear (Newcomb's old #25). (Note: The George H. Clapp "Newcomb-25" in the American Numismatic Society collection was called "N-25 Proof" by Howard Newcomb, but it is a misattributed "Newcomb-42" proof-only die variety. That coin is accompanied by a notation in Newcomb’s unique handwriting calling it a proof strike of his #25 variety. Apparently Newcomb confused the proof-only N-42 with some die states of N-24 to come up with his description of #25, including his reference to proof strikes.) DWH #1250.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
