1847 N-21 R1 MS64.
1847 N-21 R1 MS64. Bright original mint red just starting to fade to light steel brown on the highest points. A gem cent if not for a splash of olive toning covering the ear and surrounding hair details. Otherwise this cent is free of any spots, contact marks, or other defects. Even with the obverse splash, this cent still displays 80% of the bright original mint color on the obverse and 90% on the reverse. MDS, die state b early. The die crack at ME is present but very light (Newcomb’s old #40), and the fine die lines at the inner and main curls are dull but visible, as are most of the reverse die lines (Newcomb’s #21). Obviously this is a very rare transition piece that displays the attributes of both Newcomb varieties. Tied for finest known honors with two other pieces in the Grellman census. DWH #2278.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
