Manure sweepers employed in the 6th Ward District under the superintendence of Captain James McGrath for the week ending April 17th. Very interesting to note that 27 of the 29 mens names on this document could not write and signed "their mark" as and X instead of their name. Total wages for the 29 were $63.00. The payroll of the list of the 4 cartmen during the same period show that their wages were $35.50. Much more than the sweepers and 3 of the 4 cartmen also could not write. Document shows these men had 178 "manure tickets" and 79 "dirt tickets"
