1847. NGC graded Proof 66. This is a prized and extremely rare early Proof issue. The original mintage was large for this decade, with perhaps as many as 10 pieces struck. Over the ensuing generations a few have been lost or disappeared, and today 8 are thought to be known. This one is tied with one other a PCGS coin at the top of those seen at the lofty gem PF-66 level. This particular coin has a monumental pedigree which matches both its quality and rarity--Atwater, Pittman, Gardner. Each of those names speaks for itself. Boldly struck with lovely old time iridescent toning.

Prior to 1858, Proof production was quite hit or miss at the Philadelphia Mint. In some years no pieces were struck at all, in other years several pieces were struck, likely on a made to order system. Special reverse dies were set aside and used over several years in some cases on various denominations, while new obverses were required due to the dates located there. For this elusive 1847 quarter, only 10 pieces struck, with 8 examples estimated at most to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. Today the rarity of these early Proofs is becoming more understood and their popularity continues to rise with demand. Naturally precious few are around and collectors must fight over the few that are available. Here is one that carries its own credentials and would be a most welcome addition to any advanced collection. Pop 1; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value 25,000 - UP
