1847 Hawaiian Cent
1847 Hawaiian Cent. ANACS graded MS-60 Brown CR 4; 15 Berries, KM #1D. The crosslet 4 pieces tend to be sharper on the facial features of the King than the other obverse, with this handsome brown specimen clearly graded on the conservative side. Bidders may want to stretch a little. The Hawaiian government ordered 100,000 copper cents from an American manufacturer in January 1847. They were used by the various island governors for use when collecting duty and tax. In 1862, according to Medcalf, "the last known time of issue by the Treasury, 11,595 coins were outstanding." Medcalf goes on to explain that in 1885, the approximately 88,000 remaining coins in the treasury were shipped out of the country as scrap and melted. A sad end to this marvelous historic relic of the Hawaiian Kingdom! (PCGS # 10965).
Estimated Value $900 - 950.
