1847 Hawaiian Cent
1847 Hawaiian Cent. Crosslet 4, 15 berries (7 + 8). PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. Some scattered fly-specks on both sides and loaded with mint red color. A decidely rare coin in this high grade. Only 100,000 minted but as of 1862, when the Hawaiian government made an audit, only 11,000 cents were left in circulation. Presumably the number declined steadily after that, leaving behind only a few specimens to supply the growing ranks of collectors. In full red and brown Mint condition, this Kamehameha III cent is eminently desirable. Pop 61; 19 finer (PCGS # 10966). King Kamehameha III ruled the Hawaiian Islands from 1824 until his death in 1854. The coins were introduced into the Islands in 1847 at a time when the circulating coinage consisted of a mishmash of mostly worn coins of the world and some U.S. silver and gold denominations. Hawaiian silver coins would not be introduced until 1883. Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000. Our item number 141298 "
