1847-D $5 MS60 NGC. Variety 17-I, from a reverse
1847-D<$5> MS60 NGC. Variety 17-I, from a reverse die first used in 1845. The obverse is most easily identified by traces of recutting to the left of the bases of 1 and 4. Contrary to Winter's description, the top right corner of the digit 7 lightly touches the neck truncation. The reverse is cracked from the border, diagonally through the F, to the tops of IVE D, the pellet, and to the rim over the final A. This is a sharply struck and highly lustrous example with frosty yellow-gold surfaces. Myriad abrasions are present on both sides, but there are no singularly distracting marks. A reverse rim bruise is visible over ME. Attractive and highly desirable. Only about a dozen examples of this date survive in Mint State grades.
