1847-D $2 1/2 MS60 PCGS.
1847-D $2 1/2 MS60 PCGS. Variety 9-M. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Earlier die state than the preceding coin with stronger remnants of the original punches to the left of the 47 in the date.RARITY INFORMATION: As mentioned above, there are an estimated eight to ten Uncirculated 1847-D quarter eagles known. The present example is notable for being the most original one that we have seen and probably the single nicest one that is available for under $10,000.STRIKE: This example is a bit less well struck than the MS64 1847-D just offered but it still shows very good detail for the issue. The obverse is quite well detailed while the reverse has some minor weakness on the eagle's right leg.SURFACES: It is difficult to fully view the surfaces of this piece as they are covered by deep coloration. With light magnification they appear to be quite clean for the grade and much more choice than usual for this date.LUSTER: A good deal of luster is present but it is obscured by the depth of the coloration. It appears that the luster is slightly grainy in its texture.COLORATION: The dark, completely original color of this coin is its best feature. Both sides have a very dark green-gold overtone with reddish-gold in the fields. This is what a 150+ year old gold coin looks like that has never been cleaned or dipped, and the color on this piece is as nice as on any Dahlonega quarter eagle that we have seen in some time. For the collector who appreciates complete, unabashed originality, this coin is a must-have.EYE APPEAL: This coin is totally original and has great eye appeal as a result. It is nicely detailed with clean surfaces and some luster below the superb, deep original color. Coins with this look are generally accorded a significant eye appeal among Dahlonega specialists. We refer to this appearance as "crusty" and there are very few remaining 19th century gold coins that have this look.COMPARABLES: It is difficult to provide comparables for this coin as nearly every PCGS or NGC MS60 or MS61 1847-D quarter eagle lacks the crusty appearance that this piece possesses.PEDIGREE: Obtained from Doug Winter in 2000. Formerly in the Winter Collection. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances.
