1847-C<$5> MS61 NGC. Variety 9-E. In 1847 the Charlotte Mint struck 84,151 half eagles. This compares to an average annual year's output, for the 22 out of 23 years that the mint struck half eagles from 1839 to 1861 (excluding 1845, when a fire caused a cessation of coinage) of 39,190 pieces. The record output, however, did not translate into record numbers of Mint State coins for the issue, as demand was at its peak, and most C-mint issues circulated extensively. The NGC Census Report shows 14 examples of this coin in all Mint State grades, while an issue with a "typical" mintage, say the 1854-C with a mintage of 39,000+ pieces, shows 12 pieces in Mint State. The present specimen shows a surprisingly well executed strike on the reverse that shows a bit of softness on the eagle's right (facing) claw and the fletchings. The obverse shows the usual softness on the hair above the forehead and on the forelock. A V-shaped scrape in the left obverse field near star 2 is noted. Other surface distractions are minimal and grade-consistent. Census: 7 in 61, 2 finer (7/06).
