1847-C<$2 1/2> MS63 PCGS. Variety 8-F. 1847 was a year of peak activity at the Charlotte Mint, since North Carolina mines were still productive, and the war with Mexico increased demand for gold coinage. Nonetheless, most pieces struck by the facility were half eagles. The 1847-C quarter eagle has a relatively low mintage of 23,226 pieces, less than one-third of the emission of half eagles. Since no one collected gold coins by date and mintmark in 1847, these coins were regarded merely as bullion. Select Mint State survivors are rare. As of (8/06), PCGS reports six pieces in MS63 and another six in MS64, but these numbers are undoubtedly inflated to some extend by resubmissions over the past twenty years. This beautiful yellow-gold has pleasing luster, and the sharp strike belies its C-mint status. Best of all, there are no marks of any severity. A prize for the alert specialist.
From The Della Collection.
