1847-C $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Variety 8-F. The 1847-C is not only the most common quarter eagle from this mint, it is also among the best produced. This makes it an ideal date for the collector seeking a nice, affordable example for type purposes. This handsome AU58 is absolutely ideal as a type coin. It is mostly well struck with a sharp obverse and some minor weakness on the reverse that is localized to the right leg and talons. The surfaces are clean with no significant marks. The obverse has a few light hairlines on the lower portion of that side; the reverse shows light abrasions as expected for the grade. Close to three-quarters of the original mint luster can be seen and there is light friction only over the high spots. The color is a pleasing pale green-gold with an obverse toning spot at star 5. For less than $5,000 this is just about the nicest available quality for a Charlotte quarter eagle.
As many as 250-350 examples of the 1847-C are known. In AU, as many as 70-100 pieces exist with AU55 and AU58 pieces only moderately scarce by the standards of this series. An estimated 20-30 coins are known in Uncirculated, including a group of five or six properly graded MS64s.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
