1847-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Winter 8-F, the only known dies. Early die state, without the reverse crack from the eagle's right (facing) wing to the base of the M in AMERICA. Despite its status as the most easily obtainable Charlotte Mint Quarter Eagle, the 1847-C should not be considered "common" in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. Just 23,226 pieces were produced, and no more than 57 of the 275 coins believed extant grade AU. The present example is the lightest rub away from a Mint State grade. The strike is typically sharp for the issue with the only appreciable weakness confined to the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers. A loupe will reveal striations (as produced) in the obverse field, particularly around the date, but neither side reveals any singularly distracting circulation marks. Finally, remnants of original mint luster shimmer in the more protected areas around many of the peripheral devices. This coin would serve well as a representative of Charlotte Mint coinage in a near-Mint type set. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
