1847 1C MS65 Red PCGS. N-24a, R.1. Tied for Condition Census # 1 (per Bob Grellman). This is an early state of the dies with numerous strong die lines (as produced) in the obverse field around Liberty's portrait. There is also an irregular obverse die crack (as struck) from the base of the 4 in the date to the denticles below. All known examples of this die marriage exhibit the latter feature. While Newcomb-24 is a common variety of the 1847 Cent, it is certainly a significant condition rarity at the present grade level. The PCGS designation of MS65 Red is impressive enough in its own right, but this coin also includes a card from Bob Grellman with an EAC grade of 69/67. He also notes on the card that there are three hairline scratches on Liberty's cheek and neck and a reverse stain over the C in CENT. These are really the only mentionable blemishes. The otherwise razor sharp strike wanes ever so slightly over some of the obverse star centrils, and the full, frosty textured luster swirls around both sides in rich reddish-orange shades. A coin that would fit into the finest specialized collection of Coronet Cents. PCGS has graded only two 1847 Cents with a Red designation, the other being an MS64 (10/02).
