1847<$10> MS62 PCGS. This honey-gold type coin is well struck, both in the centers and on the stars. Luster is extensive, and the eye appeal is exceptional for a No Motto eagle. A subtle pinscratch in the left obverse field limits the grade but not the eye appeal. From the Six-fold bun subtype, also known as the "Bulging Bun" variety. Rounded Bun 1847 eagles were also struck, and this subtype continued through 1860, when the Bulging Bun made a comeback that lasted until the series finally ended in 1907. Variety specialists should note that the crossbar of the 4 is lightly repunched, and the base of the date is entered more deeply than the upper portion of the logotype. On the reverse, both lines in stripe 2 extend into the shield, but curve away from each other.
Ex: Garrett Collection (Stack's, 3/76), lot 382; Harry W.
