1846-O $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS.
1846-O $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. This appears to be the Breen-6186, so-called overdate, that shows traces of what appears to be a 4 beneath the 6 in the date. It is given little credence as a real overdate because no Quarter Eagles were struck in New Orleans during 1844. Akers acknowledges the issue as extremely rare in Mint State. Only a handful of the 62,000 coins minted have escaped circulation, and of these, Akers claims only two have even a minute claim to MS63 - this information now being updated by population figures from the two services. To date (11/03), both PCGS and NGC (combined) have graded only three pieces MS63 with three finer. It would be hard to imagine a finer example with its smooth, creamy surfaces and bright luster. Pronounced weakness is noted at the center of the reverse, a characteristic of this issue, and the grade-limiting factor. An underrated and undervalued issue. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
