1846 N-22 R7 Small Date Proof-Only
1846 N-22 R7 Small Date Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown. Mint red fading to bluish steel brown with half the original red color remaining, mostly on the obverse. The obverse is a remarkable gem, virtually flawless. The reverse is not quite as nice because of a small swipe of darker brown toning at ICA, and there are minute specks of crud in protected areas of the stain. The only other flaw is microscopic lamination down from the right base of E in CENT, as struck. The fields are nicely reflective with deep mirrors that offer outstanding eye appeal. A great cent and a solid gem except for the small stain. Finest by a small margin of only 6 known, and one of those is housed in the Smithsonian. Called Proof-64 and finest known by a small margin in the Del Bland and Denis Loring census lists. Our grade is Proof-63+, CC#1 by a small margin in the Grellman census. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only Proof Red & Brown example graded at PCGS for the variety. DWH #1862 (PCGS # 400586) .
Estimated Value $15,000-UP.
