1846<H10C> XF45 NGC. V-1. Only one variety of this date was recorded by Valentine, however, a second variety was later described by Walter Breen. The Valentine-1 die combination was used for business strikes, as seen here, while Proofs are the later "Breen-2" variety. Advanced collectors realize that this is the only date in the 1840s where Mint State examples are actually rarer than Proofs. This example is one of the rare business strikes, and is highly prized as such. Heavy date digits slant down to the right, with the 46 extremely close together. This is a lovely example for the grade with splendid pastel blue and gold color on both sides. Hints of underlying luster remain, especially near the borders.
From The William A.
