<B>1846<H10C> AU55 NGC.</B></I> V-1. Only one variety of this date was recorded by Valentine, however, a second variety was later described by Walter Breen. The Valentine-1 die combination was used for business strikes, as seen here, while Proofs are the later "Breen-2" variety. Advanced collectors realize that this is the only date in the 1840s where Mint State examples are actually rarer than Proofs. This example is one of the rare business strikes, and is highly prized as such. Heavy date digits slant down to the right, with the 46 extremely close together. Most survivors are in low grade. The Choice AU specimen offered here displays silver-gray surfaces with peripheral gold and green accents, especially on the obverse. Save for wispy ticks and hairlines, the surfaces are devoid of significant abrasions.
