1846-D/D $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS.
1846-D/D $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Variety 7-K. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The "D Near D" reverse. Rare early die state with the left side of the original punch plainly visible to the left of the mintmark. No major die breaks on the reverse and especially rare as such.RARITY INFORMATION: The 1846-D/D is rare in any grade and very rare in the higher AU grades. We are aware of just a single Uncirculated coin: an NGC MS62 in the RCJ collection. In order for an 1846-D/D to command a premium among collectors it must be from the same early die state as this coin exhibits. It is not likely that more than a few dozen bona-fide examples exist in all grades.STRIKE: The obverse is mostly sharp, although there is some minor weakness on the denticles from 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock. The reverse also shows some weakness on the denticles as well as a bit of a light strike on the wingtips and the inner portions of the wings.SURFACES: There are some hairlines (not from cleaning) on the obverse plus some scattered marks below slight haziness. On the reverse, a small dig can be seen below the E in AMERICA, and a clashmark joins the beak and the left (facing) wing.LUSTER: Some luster can be seen in the protected areas. The surfaces have a somewhat "gritty" appearance that is the result of having been processed.COLORATION: Both sides are a light green-gold hue. It is typical for 1846-D/D quarter eagles to have no original color.EYE APPEAL: This is a decent "commercial quality" coin that has been stripped of its original color and much of its luster, but which shows little actual wear. Considering the fact that most 1846-D/D quarter eagles are extremely well worn, the current example is about as nice as the advanced collector is likely to find.COMPARABLES: We have sold only one comparable 1846-D/D quarter eagle at auction: the 1999 ANA coin (lot 7646) that brought $4,715. The same coin had been offered by us earlier as lot 7640 in the 1999 FUN Auction where it realized $7,475.PEDIGREE: Previous pedigree unknown. Listed in the current Condition Census and probably among the top half dozen known of this variety. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
