1846-D/D<$2 1/2> AU58 PCGS. Variety 7-K. PCGS shows a population of four AU58 examples of this issue, and none finer. Our consignor, however, included a PCGS label for one of the other AU58 coins (a different serial number), thus the actual population is no more than three examples at this grade level. This is a dramatic doubled mintmark variety, with the mintmark punch first entered far left of the final position. Walter Breen considered the mintage of 2,360 coins struck in January to be this variety, with the remaining 16,943 examples to be the normal mintmark variety. The variety was discovered by Harry Bass, the well-known Texas collector of gold coinage. This is a sharply struck example with nearly full luster and excellent eye appeal. The surfaces have a few tiny handling marks, but no significant imperfections. Light clash marks are visible in the obverse and reverse fields.
