1846-D<$5> MS62 NGC. Variety 14-I. The present lot is the single finest certified Normal Mintmark 1846-D half eagle. Its best characteristic is its originality. The pale green-gold surfaces retain their "skin" and are relatively unabraded. A thin mark atop the bust truncation is mentioned solely for identification purposes, as is a small and faint strike-through above the jaw. A few wispy grazes on the upper reverse field are consistent with the grade. The strike is impressive for a Dahlonega issue, although occasionally incomplete on the major devices. Variety 14-I is interesting for its horizontal shield lines, five of which extend beneath the shield into the fletchings. The obverse displays vertical die lines beneath the eye and chin. The obverse die was slightly misaligned, which creates a partial wire rim.
