1846-D $2.50 Liberty NGC MS61
1846-D $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded MS-61. A nice bold strike with plenty of mint luster still evident. With a mintage of nearly 20,000, the 1846-D is one of the more affordable Dahlonega quarter eagles in the series. Mint States are elusive. Perhaps three-quarters of the survivors are in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine grade range. About a dozen to two dozen Mint States may be all that exist (see below).

The obverse is particularly well struck with no flattening on the hair, stars or the denticles. On the reverse, the same holds true except that some of the lower denticles are fused together. The central reverse including the shield is bold and there is full sharpness on the eagle's left (facing) leg.

Turning next to the luster, we find a few very fine hairlines (not from cleaning), though all in all the fields are exceptionally lustrous for an issue that is almost always seen with severe marks and or cleaning. The surfaces are defect-free. In brief, this is a lovely coin for the date and grade, and is certainly among the most appealing 1846-D quarter eagles from an aesthetic standpoint. Pop 4; 7 finer (PCGS # 7742) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.
