1846-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS.
1846-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 7-H. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Reverse of 1843. Normal mintmark. One of four known die varieties for the year and apparently rare in all grades.RARITY INFORMATION: With a mintage of nearly 20,000 pieces, the 1846-D is one of the more available Dahlonega quarter eagles. There are 175-200 coins known with at least three-quarters of these in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine grade range. Low-end AU coins are reasonably easy to find, but the 1846-D becomes a challenging issue in the higher AU grades and a major rarity in Uncirculated. Only four or five Mint State coins are currently known with the finest a PCGS MS63 in the Duke's Creek Collection. The Green Pond coin is regarded as the second finest known.STRIKE: The obverse is absolutely fully struck with no weakness on the hair or the denticles. On the reverse, some lightness shows on the denticles from 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock. The central reverse is bold and there is just the slightest weakness on the eagle's left (facing) leg.SURFACES: A few very fine hairlines (not from cleaning) can be seen on the obverse, but the fields are exceptionally clean for an issue that is almost always seen with severe marks. There is an easily-missed mint-made reverse planchet flake at the base of the TA in STATES while the rest of the reverse is quite clean.LUSTER: Rich, frosty luster shows on both the obverse and the reverse. The luster is original and has not been impaired. It is extremely hard to locate an 1846-D quarter eagle with luster that is as original as seen on this example.COLORATION: The centers are a medium yellow-gold and are framed by deeper coppery-rose shadings at the margins. The color has been lightened just a bit but is otherwise original and attractive. This is another so-called common date Dahlonega quarter eagle that has become just about impossible to find with color that has not been stripped by repeated cleanings and/or processing.EYE APPEAL: This is a lovely coin for the date and grade. It is much sharper struck than usual and has good surfaces and luster. The color is original enough to satisfy even the most discriminating specialist. This is certainly among the most appealing 1846-D quarter eagles from an aesthetic--as well as a technical--standpoint.COMPARABLES: We have no records of a third-party certified MS62 or better 1846-D quarter eagle having ever been sold at auction. We auctioned a PCGS MS61 as lot 4676 in January 2003 and that coin realized $8,913. The same coin had previously realized $10,925 as lot 157 in Bowers and Merena's November 2000 Bass IV Sale.PEDIGREE: Obtained from Doug Winter in January 2000; earlier from Bruce Kutcher. This is the plate coin in the second edition of "Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861," and it is listed in the current Condition Census as the second finest known. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances.
