1846-C $5 MS62 PCGS.
1846-C $5 MS62 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Variety 8-E. The 1846-C is considered the third rarest of the 24 issues in the series of Charlotte half eagles. Of the 12,995 pieces produced, it is estimated that only 75-85 examples remain today in all grades. High grade pieces are very scarce most likely because of the year-long hiatus in production caused by the fire in the Charlotte mint in early 1845, which undoubtedly increased demand for gold coins that had been missing that year. Probably an R.8 coin, in spite of the number of submissions to the major services that would indicate otherwise, this piece appears to be tied for the second finest example known, its only rival (known to us) being the Ex: Eliasberg coin. As with most of the coins from the Bass Collection, this coin has excellent aesthetic appeal. Soft mint frost is seen on each side and the striking details are uncommonly strong throughout. The light green-gold surfaces have taken on a noticeable accent of reddish patina around the margins on each side, giving the coin even stronger visual interest. Minimally abraded for the grade with no obvious or distracting abrasions on either the obverse or reverse.Ex: Lester Merkin (3/69), lot 236. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
