1846-C $5 AU53 PCGS
1846-C $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 8-E. Well struck with full detail on the obverse and reverse; there is no weakness on the eagle's neck as seen on many 1846-C half eagles. The surfaces are choice with no discernible marks or hairlines. The luster is nearly full and it has a rich frosty texture. There are not many fully original 1846-C half eagles left but those that remain are known for their excellent color ... as on this coin. There are superb rich yellow-gold hues at the obverse border while the reverse is a bit more even in its coloration. This is an exceptional coin that is attractive and completely original. It is, in fact, the type of Charlotte half eagle that is almost never seen any more. Housed in an old PCGS holder and choice for the grade.
The 1846-C is among the four or five scarcest half eagles from this mint in terms of overall rarity. It seems more available in AU than in the past but properly graded coins in the AU53 to 55 range are rare and 58s are very rare. There are as many as five or six Uncirculated pieces known with the finest still the lovely Dingler/Eliasberg coin which is graded MS63 by PCGS.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
