1846-C<$2 1/2> XF40 PCGS. Variety 7-F. This issue has the second-lowest mintage of any Charlotte Mint quarter eagle, with the 1855-C lower. Only one pair of dies was used to coin the 4,808 pieces for the year, a die that sat unused and developed rust for more than two years because of an 1844 fire that halted production. On this medium-gold example about half of the obverse stars show some detail in their centers, and some original luster still adheres on the surfaces. The hair above the coronet is weak and LIBERTY is weak from wear and die rust, but the long forecurl is pleasantly detailed. The reverse is weakly struck as usual, with deep detail only on the recesses of the eagle's wings and in the vertical shield lines. Numerous small abrasions and contact marks dot the surfaces, with a couple of nicks on Liberty's cheek and the nearby hair noted for accuracy. Population: 9 in 40, 41 finer (12/05).
From The Carolina Gold Collection.
