1846-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS
1846-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 7-F. This coin is probably closer to AU58 than AU55 in terms of wear and luster, but it has been assigned a conservative AU55 grade by PCGS because of a few marks in the fields. The detail is above average for the issue. It is well struck on the obverse and shows some minor weakness on the reverse on the right leg of the eagle. As is always the case on 1846-C quarter eagles, this piece was struck from rusted dies with patches of rust seen at the date, stars 1 and 13 and below the right wing. The surfaces possess some scattered handling marks that are slightly accented by flashes of reflective luster. At least half of the original luster is present. The color is a blend of light yellow-gold and green-gold and this gives the coin a pleasing look with clearly superior eye appeal for the issue.
The 1846-C is one of the rarest Charlotte quarter eagles. There are only 75-100 coins estimated known, with most of those in the VF-XF range. Probably no more than 12-15 properly graded AUs exist, as well as six to eight in Uncirculated. The relatively high number of Uncirculated pieces suggests that a small hoard may have existed at one time or, possibly, a few were saved by locals in commemoration of the Mint reopening in 1846 after the fire of 1844.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
