1846-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. The rarity of this difficult Charlotte issue is easily explained. First, only 4,808 pieces were produced. Second, the Charlotte Mint was closed during 1845 after a fire. This meant that the gold coins produced in 1846 were much needed in local commerce. As a result, survivors number in double digits and high grade examples are considered the second rarest among C-Mint Quarter Eagles. The obverse is reasonably well defined, with only a few blunt hair curls and mushiness on ERTY of LIBERTY. Typical softness is noted on the eagle's shield, neck feathers, and leg feathers. Two prominent contact marks can be found in the field between the eagle head's and right wing (facing). As on all known examples, there is some Mint-made roughness at the date and scattered areas of die rust on both sides. Aside from these primarily Mint caused deficiencies, the yellow-gold surfaces are accented in a whisper of reddish patina and display much of their original luster. Population: 11 in 45, 21 finer (11/01). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
