1846 50C Medium Date PR63 PCGS. WB-101. Called Small D
1846 50C Medium Date PR63 PCGS. WB-101. Called Small Date in some earlier texts. Today, 1846 half dollars are called Medium Date and Tall Date, with the earlier 1842 Small Date variety as a reference point. With a single exception, all proof 1846 half dollars are the Medium Date variety. A proof Tall Date coin was recently sold at auction where it was described as "possibly unique." Less than a dozen pieces are known. This example is from a different reverse die, or an earlier die state, than the Byers specimen sold by Stack's last October, and apparently also different than the Pittman coin. The Byers and Pittman coins each have fine die cracks through many of the letters on the reverse, and surprisingly, the plates of those two coins suggest a different pattern of die cracks on each. Die varieties of early proof coinage is certainly an area for much additional research. This pleasing proof has moderately reflective surfaces beneath deep magenta and iridescent toning on both sides. Every design point on each side is boldly detailed including Liberty's head and foot, all of the star centers, and the eagle's feathers and talons. Population: 3 in 63, 3 finer (1/07). PR64 is the finest grade assigned by PCGS to any 1846 proof half dollar.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
