1846 $5 Small Date MS62 NGC. The Small Date is the rarer of the two varieties of the 1846 Half Eagle. Breen (1988) states that William H. Woodin discovered this variant sometime prior to 1914. Although difficult to distinguish from its similarly dated Large Date counterpart, the 1846 Small Date is attributable by the relatively wide spacing between the final two digits in the date. The 1846, like most early Liberty Half Eagles, is an elusive coin in Mint State. It is similar in both overall and condition rarity to the 1844 and 1845. Moderately bright in the fields, the present representative is medium gold in color with mostly sharp striking definition. There is some lack of detail over the eagle's neck feathers, but the eye appeal benefits from an appreciable lack of sizeable distractions. There is a lamination (as struck) over the lower left reverse through the U in UNITED and the olive branch, and a spot is noted on the same side at the final S in STATES.
