1846/5-O<$10> AU53 NGC. This issue has been variously contested as an overdate and by others in the opposing camp who claim the coin is actually a recut 6. Admittedly, on the present example the so-called "knob" of the 5 visible inside the bottom loop of the 6 is not in an ideal position to actually be a knob (unless extensive die lapping effaced all other traces of a 5). Doug Winter's New Orleans Mint Gold Coins: 1838-1909 claims there are four die varieties of the 1846-O, including two overdates: Winter says of the first overdate "the knob of the 5 can be clearly seen in the loop of the 6. The mintmark is positioned over EN in TEN. [The present example shows this feature.] This is the more common of the two overdates and it is the second most available variety of the year." Of the second overdate he says, "The curve of a 5 can be seen within the loop of the 6 and part of the 5 can be seen as well, to the right of 6. This mintmark is far to the right ..." But to further confound the opposing camps, this example shows metal inside the upper loop of the 6 that is clearly not an engraved-over 5, nor apparently a 6, for that matter. No trace of another date or digit shows to the right of the 6. This would be an interesting acquisition for the specialist in New Orleans gold, and perhaps a good chance to drag out the microscope for further study. This coin has pleasing straw-gold surfaces that are well struck and show few mentionable distractions. Census: 10 in 53, 13 finer (12/05).
