1846 $5 Large Date MS63 PCGS. The Large Date is freque
1846<$5> Large Date MS63 PCGS. The Large Date is frequently confused with the more common Small Date. The digits of the two different logotypes have similar shapes. In his 1988 Encyclopedia, Breen notes that the Large Date is spaced 1 846 while the Small Date is spaced 18 4 6, and this diagnostic is best. The present piece has a dramatic die crack from the E in STATES to the lowest arrowhead, but this die crack is prominent on only a small portion of known examples. The present needle-sharp example has lovely apricot-gold toning. The fields are mildly prooflike, while the borders exhibit cartwheel luster. A pinscratch from stars 7 to 9 provides an identifier for this smooth and important example. As of (7/06), PCGS has certified only 14 pieces in Mint State, and among these, the current lot is the single finest certified.
