1846<$5> Large Date MS62 NGC. A splendid strike showing full definition in virtually all areas except in some the tresses of hair directly above Liberty's forehead. All of the obverse stars show their radials and the eagle's plumage is boldly and deeply delineated. The devices are frosty and the fields have a texture intermediate between satiny and prooflike. Despite a generous mintage of 395,942 pieces, very few, if any, were set aside at the time of issue for collectors, and accordingly, the only Uncirculated examples that are available to the current generation of numismatists are those that survived by chance. David Akers was able to account for listings of just 13 Uncirculated examples in a series of 377 major auction sales; a fact that attests to how elusive the issue exists above the AU grade level. Two different varieties of 1846 half eagles are recognized by collectors: although the differences between the Large Date and Small Date varieties are not easy to describe, it's possible to see the differences by consulting Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia, which illustrates both types. Population: 11 in 62, 7 finer (6/05).
