1846<25C> PR64 PCGS. In his Complete Encyclopedia of Proof Coins, Walter Breen itemized seven individual examples of this date known to him in Proof condition. He also described four silver and minor coin Proof Sets, as well as two complete Proof Sets. Some of those pieces in sets were also included in the individual listings, thus perhaps nine or ten such coins were known to him at that time. Later, in his Complete Encyclopedia, Breen revised his estimate to 12 survivors. We believe this latter figure is probably close to the actual population. There is little doubt that the population figure, which included 16 examples at this grade level or finer (at both PCGS and NGC), includes several resubmissions. All of the characteristics mentioned by Breen for these Proofs are visible on this coin, although some may be viewed only by tilting the coin under a light source.
Quite sharply struck with all detail brought up to the finest advantage. On this example, even tan-lilac toning bathes both sides with intense electric-blue and lavender undertones visible at certain angles. The fields are bright and form a perfect backdrop for the sharply defined devices. A few very small, unobtrusive marks are noted in the fields. One particular mark deserves mention, being a lint mark extending down from the right arm of the second T in STATES. This is an excellent pedigree marker for numismatic scholars. A simply gorgeous and elusive coin. Population: 8 in 64, 0 finer (8/05).
Ex: Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena (1/02), lot 407; JFS Collection (Heritage, 8/04), lot 4042.
