1846 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. This early P-mint Quarter Eagle has an enticingly low mintage of just 21,598 pieces. Nevertheless, it is not widely recognized as a rarity. In high grades, the '46-P is particularly elusive, with just nine Mint State coins known to NGC and PCGS (7/02). This minimally rubbed survivor is far better struck than the majority of extant examples with emerging definition over the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers. Remnants of modest brightness are seen in the fields, and, although scuffy from circulation, the mostly yellow-gold surfaces are free of singularly mentionable distractions. Some pale copper tinged accents hug the outline of the reverse eagle. We had to search all the way back to our January 1999 FUN Signature Sale before we could find a record for the sale of an AU58 1846 Quarter Eagle. That coin, certified by PCGS, realized $2,243 as lot 7951. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
