1846 10C PR63 PCGS. The diagnostics for this rare early proof Seated Dime as reported by Walter Breen (1977, 1988) and Brian Greer (1992) are: 1. Shield point between tip and left upright of the 1 in the date. 2. Left edge of the base of the 1 in the date over the center of a denticle. 3. Pendant on Liberty's gown over left edge of the upright of the 4 in the date. 4. Date slopes down from left to right. The present example also displays outlines to many of the obverse star points that suggest a powerful impression for these devices during preparation of the die. In his 1988 Encyclopedia, Walter Breen estimates that 14-18 proof 1846 Dimes are extant from an unknown, although presumably limited original mintage. Writing in 1977, the author pedigrees seven examples, the penultimate one of which displays a "lintmark between 6th and 7th stars." The present example displays that feature, but we are not 100% certain that it is the coin Breen pedigrees to the Balboa bank set. There are also identifying obverse lintmarks (as struck) inside stars 2 and 3. Both sides are awash in rich olive-charcoal hues that yield to golden-apricot undertones as the surfaces dip into the light. Moderately bright at direct angles with no outwardly noticeable handling marks. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
