1846<1/2 C> Second Restrike. SR-23, B-3, R.6. PR65 Red and Brown NGC. PR65 EAC. Small date; Small berries, file marks at RICA. This is number 10 of 18 examples listed by Richard Coleman in his Monograph of Second Restrike Proof Half Cents. Some examples of the 1846 Second Restrike Half Cents have a short spine extending from Liberty's neck. Others, including the present example, do not have any trace of this spine, nor do Originals or First Restrikes. Apparently some minor injury occurred to this obverse die after the First Restrikes were produced, and disappeared through die use or polishing as the Second Restrikes were coined. A lovely example with considerable original red mint color on the obverse, toned mostly medium brown on the reverse, highlighted by pale blue toning. Few pedigree identification marks can be found on this example, although a small spot of lighter color is visible between the outer points of star 6.
Ex: Charles J.
