Dated October 25, 1845. Document measures 7.5" x 8.25" Robert W. Smith (1814-1851) Battle of San Jacinto Texas soldier & Indian fighter. Born in North Carolina & came to Texas in 1836, joining the Texas Army March 6, 1836. Served as first lietenant in Captain H. S. Arnold's company at the Battle of San Jacinto. Went on to serve as Captain in the 1839 Cherokee War. He is credited with the shot that killed Chief Bowl at the battle of Neches. Bowl was responsible for the death of Smith's father in law. Smith took the sword off the dead chied that was presented to Chief Bowl from Sam Houston. The sword was given to the Masonic lodge in Henderson Texas by Smith. in 1845 Smith became the first Sheriff of Rusk County Texas.
