1845-O<$10> AU58 NGC. Dramatically repunched 8 and 5 in the date, plus a recut O mintmark. Put a loupe on this one and enjoy the antics from the 1840s. Note the broadly recut 8, which extends well past the left side of the 4, in fact the point of the 4 protrudes into the lower loop of the recut 8. Similarly the 5 is broadly recut, with at least another half of the existing flag and entire loop of that digit seen well to the right of the finished 5. We also note strong die scratches to the right of the date, where attempts were made to efface this calamity, these heavy die file marks are seen extending from the right edge of the offending recut 5 nearly touching the truncation of Liberty to the final star. Perhaps additional recuttings were effaced by this process, but it is difficult to tell. The bun of Liberty appears to have been lapped as well, with both the beads and curls disconnected from her head by the field. Obviously, not many were coined of this scarce variety, and this is certainly one of the finest to survive, if not the finest. Not reported in Breen, although other recuttings are mentioned for this date. A perfect companion coin to the comical recut date half dollars (and other denominations) from this period. As a date, this coin is memorable for its condition and rarity so close to mint state.
