1845 Liberty Seated Dollar PCGS MS62
Attractively toned and with plenty of frostiness around the stars on the obverse periphery, within the legends on the reverse margin, and throughout the obverse and reverse devices, though the open areas are prooflike. Both sides evenly matched and well struck. Very nice surfaces for an early low-mintage rarity of this date.

Throughout this trend of low-mintage Silver Dollar production begun in 1844, the 1845 has an original mintage of just 24,500 pieces. As popular among collectors as any other low-mintage date in the series, the realization often comes to a collector that he needs to acquire this date in Mint condition before all of them disappear off the market forever. Writing in 1993, Q. David Bowers describes the 1845 in Mint State as "the rarest of all Liberty Seated Dollars of the 1840s." This elusive nature is such that both the Richmond Collection (David Lawrence, 2004) specimen and that in the Morris Silverman Collection (Heritage, 2002) -- two recent "name" sales graded only MS-60.

For obvious reasons, this one of the only Choice 1845 Seated Dollar ever offered, and it is at the top of Condition Census for the issue surpassed by only a few others. The surfaces really cannot get any more original in appearance. A few highpoints of the reverse eagle are a little softly defined, but we stress that the overall impression is sharp for the type. Mint luster is softly present and suitably frosted, as there are even hints of very modest brightness evident at certain angles. Just a few scattered, generally well-concealed abrasions are all that seem to bar this rarity from an even finer grade. (#6931)
